AVID

 

MISSION STATEMENT

 

The mission of AVID is to ensure that ALL students, and most especially the least served students who are in the middle:

      • will succeed in a rigorous curriculum
      • will complete a college-preparatory path
      • will enter mainstream activities of the school
      • will increase their enrollment in a four-year college, and
      • will become educated, responsible participants and learners in a democratic society.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

Our Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) program provides students who have untapped potential with the additional skill sets that they need to get into college and excel in a higher-education environment. To be considered for enrollment, students must apply to the program. The application process usually includes the submission of a written essay and an interview. Once accepted, students participate in the following course components:

      • Study skills, such as two-column note-taking
      • Academic writing
      • Learning to study in groups
      • Tutorials run by trained college students
      • Preparation for applying to colleges and college visits
      • Field trips and guest speakers

COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

Entry Band is a performance-based course which requires student participation in day and evening performances. Through large and small ensemble experiences, students will learn basic theory and performance skills such as articulation, embouchure, hand position and posture. Through their participation in an ensemble the students will be introduced to blend, balance, intonation (playing in tune) and instrumentation. Students will learn self-discipline through home practice and rehearsal sessions.

DRAMA

 

MISSION STATEMENT

 

Introduction to Drama Elective provides the students with a comfortable and well-rounded sense of themselves as a performer, their relations to other student actors/classmates, and to their environment. At the same time, the goal is for students to develop skills of perception, awareness, and appreciation for the craft of theatre as an art form, and as a learning process. This course requires no previous experience. However, an open mind, a lot of enthusiasm, and self-discipline will be very helpful when joining the class.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

This course is designed so that students will become more comfortable and relaxed while performing in front of an audience. Students will engage in building their drama and acting skills through improvisations, skits and drama exercises. The main goal of this elective is for all students to have fun and to participate in the culminating end of the trimester performance which is carefully selected and appropriate for middle school students and audiences.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

In this course, students will study the arthropoda phylum which includes spiders, crustaceans, centipedes, millipedes and insect. Students will conduct a field collection of specimens.  They will also learn how to make their own insect collection.

This course fosters student leadership, communication, and organizational skills through planning and implementing student and spirit activities. Students will develop their problem-solving capabilities and the citizenship character traits of teamwork, respect, and community service.

The Goals of the CACC are outlined in the tenets of the Cadet Code (spelling out the mnemonic device LEADERSHIP) which encourage:

b. Education - The success of all cadets in academic endeavors, including staying in school and pursuing higher education.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

PLTW Gateway provides engineering curriculum for middle school students that challenges, inspires, and offers schools variety and flexibility. Students get rigorous and relevant experiences through activity-, project-, and problem-based learning. They use industry-leading technology to solve problems while gaining skills in communication, collaboration, critical-thinking, and creativity. Students apply the design process to solve problems and understand the influence of creativity and innovation in their lives. They work in teams to design a playground and furniture, capturing research and ideas in their engineering notebooks. Using Autodesk® design software, students create a virtual image of their designs and produce a portfolio to showcase their innovative solutions.
