Lynwood Unified Launches Intramural Sports Program at All Elementary, Middle Schools

Lynwood Unified's elementary and middle school students don't have to wait until high school to play team sports leagues. Thanks to a partnership with after school enrichment program Think Together, students in grades 4 through 8 can now play such sports as flag football, basketball, volleyball and more.

This fall, the District launched an intramural sports program, which includes leagues, tournaments and competitions among peers at all Lynwood Unified elementary and middle schools, starting with flag football.

“We want to offer as many engaging expanded day activities as possible and sports are very popular and engaging with both students and families,” Community Liaison Ellis Barfield said. “They provide an opportunity for physical activity, team building and leadership. We also wanted to give our elementary and middle school students a chance to learn now how competitive sports will be once they reach high school.”

About 300 students in the afterschool program have participated in the inaugural six-week flag football season, with a total of about 60 student cheerleaders who have been rooting them on from the sidelines. Students – who are being coached by District and Think Together staff – are provided with equipment and uniforms.

In December, Hosler and Cesar Chavez middle schools will offer a co-ed volleyball season. After the winter break, elementary and middle school students will also have the opportunity to participate in a basketball league for winter and a soccer league in spring.
