Women’s History Month

The month of March has been identified as Women's History Month.  As a school community let's embark on a journey with our children to discover the incredible stories of women who have shaped our world. From pioneers in science and technology to advocates for social justice and equality, let's instill in our students the importance of respecting and celebrating women's achievements. Together, we can inspire them to dream big, challenge stereotypes, and create a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.


Benchmark Tests

Students will be taking both their English and Math benchmark tests during the week of March 4th.  Please take a moment to remind your student about the importance of doing well on these tests because they help prepare them for the state tests in May, which 



During the week of March 18th, our students who have yet to redesignate as English Learners will take the ELPAC test.  Passing this assessment will allow them to take an essential step in redesignating.  If your student is scheduled to take this test, please encourage them to try their best!


Dress Code

We need everyone’s assistance to ensure our students are arriving at school in the proper dress code in order to promote a safe campus for the entire HMS School Community.  Students who do not comply will receive laundered loaners or parents will be contacted.  Click this link for more details:  HMS DRESS CODE


After School Dismissal

In order to support a safe learning environment for everyone, please make sure your student(s) goes directly home or to an agreed safe location after school.  We ask that your student(s) do not loiter in the park or any other areas in the city.  


Virtual Coffee with the Principal 

We will have our monthly Coffee with the Principal session on Friday, March 8th at 9am.  This will be a virtual session.  Our guest speakers from the District Office will present on the Dual Enrollment Program that allows our students to earn college credits while still enrolled in high school and our Career Technical Education classes.  A link for the session will be sent out prior to the meeting.


Elementary Site Visits Continue

Starting this week, our staff will be visiting Elementary Schools to collect student Course Requests for the 2024-25 school year.  Here are the visits for this week:

  • March 4 - Wilson Elementary
  • March 5 - Rosa Parks Elementary
  • March 7 - Helen Keller Elementary 


2023-24 Yearbook Sale - Our yearbooks for the 2023-24 school year are currently on sale for $40.  We have a limited supply, so purchase one as soon as possible.  Questions, call us at 310-603-1447 or click this link https://bit.ly/ContactHMS


Additional SBAC Practice Test

The majority of our students will be taking the SBAC test which is the California state test for public school students in the month of May.  This assessment will determine how well they understand English and Math at their grade level.  In addition, our 8th graders will take a science test to determine their understanding of 8th grade science concepts.  Click this link for step-by-step instructions: Practice Test or access the PDF below.  In addition to these practice tests, your student should be reading at least 30 minutes daily at home.


Run/Walk for Education

Student Check-In Assemblies

Our monthly assembly took place on Tuesday, February 20, 2024 during all PE classes.  During this session important reminders such as being in school uniform, maintaining a SAFE and CLEAN campus, Attendance and Benchmark Data, as well as the 8th Grade Activities Criteria were reviewed.  Scroll down to the Attached Files to view the presentation.

Paper - Online Tutoring:  The first semester report cards have been mailed out.  If your student received a D or F in a class make sure they take advantage of our FREE, Chat-Based Online Tutoring through PAPER.  This service is available 24/7.  Click this link for more information:  Paper Tutoring.


8th Grade Parent Meeting Follow-Up

During our 8th Grade Parent meetings on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, several parents asked about how their student(s) could potentially attend Firebaugh High School for the 2024-25 school year.  In order to do so, please click on the following link: Intradistrict Permit.  You will find the flyer with more information below.
