Attendance Policies

Regular School Attendance is Essential to Student Success

At Hosler Middle School, we follow California’s compulsory education laws, which require students to attend school every day and arrive on time.

Regular attendance is key to academic success, and we appreciate your partnership in ensuring that your child is present and on time every day.

The following policies are in place to support a safe and productive learning environment:

Tardies

School begins promptly at 8:20 a.m. Students must be in their assigned seat within 30 minutes of the start time. Any student arriving more than 30 minutes late without a valid excuse or doctor’s note is considered absent under Education Code 48260.

If a student is late, they must bring a note from a parent/guardian explaining the reason for the tardy.

Reporting an Absence

Parents or guardians can verify an absence by:

  • Calling (310) 603-1447, ext. 5020 — available 24 hours a day. Voicemail messages are received and processed daily.

  • Sending a written note with the student upon their return if phone access is not available.

Absences must be verified within three (3) days of the student’s return to school. Unverified, unexcused, or excessive absences (including illness without a doctor’s note) may result in a Saturday School assignment.

Absence/Tardy Notes Must Include:

  • Student’s full name

  • Student ID number

  • Date(s) of absence or tardy

  • Reason for absence or tardy

  • Parent/guardian signature

  • Daytime phone number

Upon returning to school, students should report first to the Attendance Office to submit their absence note before going to class.

Important Reminders

  • A parent/guardian must show valid ID before any student information is released or before a student is signed out.

  • Students will not be released during lunch periods unless approved by an administrator.

We thank you for helping us support your child’s academic success through consistent and on-time attendance. If you have any questions, please contact the Attendance Office at (310) 603-1447 ext. 5020.
