Future Knights Explore Opportunities at Lynwood High School Electives Showcase

Hosler Middle School eighth-grader Arizen Chhay gained a clearer picture of his high school future after attending Lynwood High School’s Electives Showcase on February 12, where he explored the many opportunities awaiting him next year as a Knight.

"The event was really interesting and gave me a better sense of what's available," Chhay said. "Culinary and photography really piqued my interest. I cook a lot at home, and seeing the different aspects of photography here really fascinated me."

The showcase brought Lynwood High students back to their former middle school campus to present programs available to incoming freshmen. Students rotated through interactive booths featuring athletics, Associated Student Body (ASB), Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), Career Technical Education pathways and STEAM electives, including engineering, robotics, culinary arts, photography, dance and band.

The event also created a mentoring opportunity, allowing middle schoolers to connect with high school students who recently experienced the same transition.

“It feels really good to be someone students look up to,” said Lynwood High ASB student and Sophomore Class Vice President Aleshany Yanez. "When I was in middle school, I remember attending this event, and I know what it's like to be nervous or afraid to ask questions. I'm glad I can help make them feel comfortable and show them what it's like coming into high school."

The Electives Showcase reflects Lynwood Unified’s commitment to supporting a smooth transition from middle school to high school. Firebaugh High will bring the same experience to Cesar Chavez Middle School in March, continuing the District’s efforts to connect campuses, strengthen college and career readiness and foster a strong sense of belonging.
